Bill Number Bill Description Bill Status
HB 322
Good Policy
Veterans; establish a permissive preference in private employment for certain veterans. Dead
Analysis: This bill protects businesses who wish to give preference to honorably discharged veterans, unremarried widows of deceased honorably discharged veterans who died in the line of duty, and spouses of people with total disabilities when hiring. As a general rule the government should not be regulating who private businesses should or should not hire. However, businesses being allowed to give preference to a certain group of potential employees is integral to their freedom and this bill protects that albeit under a narrow set of circumstances.

HB 1510
Good Policy
Occupational licenses; revise provisions regarding licensing for certain military applicants. Dead
Analysis: This bill makes it easier for military personnel and their spouses to receive occupational licenses from the various state boards that oversee them. While this bill does lessen regulatory hurdles for one type of citizen and is surely a step in the right direction, regulatory hurdles should be lessened broadly for every type of citizen. Occupational licensing is often needless and arbitrary, placing regulatory hurdles in front of Mississippians who are attempting to work and acquire gainful employment. Occupational Licensing boards are furthermore often staffed by individuals already active in the industry they are tasked with regulating and who only stand to gain personally by raising the standards that their would-be competitors must meet in order to compete against them in the market.
